Leadership is a funny thing that’s hard to define. What does it really mean to be a leader? I’ve seen so many “flavors” of leadership that it can be challenging to quantify. Ultimately, I don’t think good leadership is about telling people what to do or calling the shots. I don’t think it’s just being the guy at the top of the pyramid. I don’t even think it’s about being the smartest person in the room.
Authentic leadership – effective, lasting, and good – is both inspirational and aspirational. Let’s unpack what I mean.
Inspiration VS Aspiration
What’s the difference between inspiration and aspiration? They’re closely related, but understanding the link between the two is essential. In simplest terms, inspiration is being given the urge to do something. We’re stimulated to feel or act. Aspiration is the hope or ambition to achieve. Inspirations can lead to aspirations. In general, inspiration can be fleeting, but aspirations often last.
I’m using the term “aspirational” because it’s the natural follow-through from inspiration. An aspirational leader helps others find not only motivation but also purpose. If you see these terms used interchangeably, know that the goal is to inspire action towards meaningful aspirations.
9 Qualities That Define Aspirational Leaders
Quality #1 – Visionary Thinking
Inspiring leaders have a clear and compelling vision of the future. They know where they want to go and articulate this vision in a way that resonates with others. Remember how inspiration leads to aspiration? Part of your job is to make that aspiration tangible and achievable. You do that by presenting a compelling but grounded vision for the future!
Leaders show others how their actions today can contribute to a better tomorrow.
Quality #2 – Authenticity
Aspirational leaders are true to themselves and lead with integrity. Their words match their actions, building trust and credibility. They are open about challenges and vulnerabilities, demonstrating that leadership is about growth and learning rather than perfection. Remember: authenticity cannot be manufactured or faked. It demands real vulnerability. This doesn’t mean oversharing but a willingness to be transparent.
Quality #3 – Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
Empathy is enormously powerful, and influential leaders know it. They actively listen and empathize with their team members’ needs, feelings, and goals. A solid emotional connection creates loyalty and a deep sense of belonging. Like authenticity, though, this empathy can’t be faked, lest people see it as emotional manipulation.
Quality #4 – Empowerment
The best leaders wish to see those around them unlock their potential – and not solely for their own benefit. Believe in the capability of others and actively work to develop and empower your team through coaching, mentoring, and providing growth opportunities.
By trusting others with essential tasks and allowing them the freedom to succeed, you help build confidence and competence.
Quality #5 – Resilience
Resilience may very well be the most important quality you can have. It’s your ability to bounce back, to persevere through adversity, and to keep calm under pressure. You stay focused, committed, and level-headed no matter what life throws at you.
This allows people to see you as a solid rock – reliable and unshakeable under adverse circumstances. Resilience might not initially attract people to your leadership, but it keeps them by your side.
Quality #6 – Lead by Example
Inspiring leaders do not just talk; they lead by example, showing dedication, hard work, and commitment. I don’t want to downplay the skill of crafting a compelling speech or a world-class pitch. I do, however, know that words aren’t enough. Actions always speak louder. Put your money where your mouth is in how you work and the standards you hold.
Quality #7 – Effective Communication
Great leaders know how to communicate their vision and goals with clarity and passion. There are significant upsides to being a skilled orator. It’s your initial “hook” to garner interest and that initial action step.
Quality #8 – Courage
Courage isn’t reserved for superheroes. We can all hone and exert courage in our daily lives, and inspiring leaders do just that! They’re willing to take risks and make bold decisions that challenge the status quo. They dare to stand by their principles, even when unpopular or difficult.
Quality #9 – Commitment to a Higher Purpose
What drives aspirational leaders? We must have a purpose beyond profit or personal gain. People will clock in an instant if your leadership is self-serving. We view leadership as a form of service, putting the needs of others and the greater good above our own interests. It’s about bettering our circles, community, and world in whatever way we can.
